About Kate Richbourg

Experience the creative joy of sewing a garment of your very own! Under Kate’s expert tutelage, you will make a bespoke linen top or cardigan jacket that evokes the romance of the Lagenlook style of dressing. This is the exact top that Kate made to wear during her France trip last summer. So comfortable and easy to style in a variety of ways, you will gain the skill to personalize this garment so it is uniquely YOU!

Lagenlook meaning “layered look” in German, has been a popular way of dressing in Europe for some time. This unique style involves wearing layers of loosely shaped clothing to create a one-of-a-kind sartorial statement.

In this week-long intensive, students will learn a compendium of skills that will result in a Laggen-look style garment. Techniques include simple pattern fitting techniques and adapting a pattern to fit your perfect shape, using a sewing machine and hand stitching to create your garment. More techniques include making bias binding, embellishment stitching, raw edge finishing, making patches and using vintage trims to personalize your garment. Some may wish to make the top as a pull over and others may wish to split it up the middle to create an unstructured jacket. The choice is yours and you will leave class with a finished garment, pattern and confidence to create and adapt this piece again and again.

No experience sewing? No problem! Kate will guide you every step of the way as you create your garment. Adventurous beginners through intermediate sewists will equally enjoy this class.
All participants will receive a hand stitching kit and embellishment kit to use and keep after class. The construction techniques will be a mix of hand sewing and machine sewing. All sewing machines are provided. Students will participate in a couple of online sessions with the instructor to prepare for class including fabric resources and selection and tips on the minimal pre-class preparation work.

Students will need to select their fabric and bring it with them to class along with a minimal amount of sewing supplies to use in class. We also have several excursions planned for the week for students to source embellishments and a few more surprises related to the fiber arts along the way!
